MORE GREAT EXPOSURE POSSIBLE FOR THOSE WHO SUBMIT THEIR WORK TO THE WRITING/PITCH COMPETITION (www.nextventertainment.com/writers).

Please welcome David Saunders, head of the feature lit dept at APA Talent and Literary Agency.  This is a big deal.  APA is one of the top agencies in the business and David is a partner there and runs one of their most important literary departments.  He’s a great guy and excited to be involved with us.

TWO WEEKS LEFT AND IT IS ALL OVER…DONE.   recommend that you give it a shot.  Either you’ve got a screenplay, a pilot, a short story, a play, a graphic novel…or a TV idea.  Submit to win lots of great stuff (including the Apple iPAD!), but mostly exposure to great industry leaders like David at APA, Josie Freedman at ICM, UTA, FOX, MGM and so on….

APA’s Feature Literary department boasts an impressive roster of established screenwriters, directors and novelists who have been involved in numerous high profile projects. Their clients have written vehicles for actors including Adam Sandler, Will Farrell, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Reese Witherspoon and Tom Cruise, and directors such as Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis and Peter Weir. They have contributed to major film franchises including “Saw” and “James Bond” and work across all genres including action, horror, thriller, and comedy. APA also represents top writers and directors in feature animation as well as those on the forefront of independent film.
In Television, APA has been at the forefront of packaging a number of the most successful and critically-acclaimed shows on the air, as well as representing many of the principal artists involved in creating, producing, directing, and starring in these shows leaving an indelible mark on the industry. APA has sold shows including “24,” “SANCTUARY,” “COMMANDER IN CHIEF” and “MIRACLES, ” among others. WINNER OF THE 2009 NEXTV WEB SERIES & SHORT FILM COMPETITION USES GRANT TO BEGIN FEATURE VERSION OF HIS SHORT!

Honoring their promise to go above and beyond their generous sponsorship of the NexTv Grant, New Mexico will fly Michael Swingler and his producer, Judith Levine, in to town to begin prepping their feature film production of MIDLIFE (winning short).  Once production begins, the $60,000 Panavision camera package, plus the labor, props, transportation, and all of the rest that the $140,000 grant provides will come into play.

New Mexico is already one of the first places that the studios, networks and indie producers go to shoot, in part because of their huge talent pool and one of the most comprehensive and effective film incentive programs in the country (25% rebate on every dollar spent). They want to introduce their state to a new generation of filmmakers and chose NexTv as the vehicle to do so. If you are looking for a place to shoot, seriously consider New Mexico…I’m telling you, the film commission is incredibly helpful, the head of the local union is an amazing advocate for filmmakers, they’ve just built a $90 million studio in Albuquerque and another huge one in Santa Fe.  The crews are awesome.  Topography is surprisingly versatile, etc… Visit New Mexico Film on the web (www.nmfilm.com) or email me at rbecker@nextventertainment.com and I’ll send you to the right people down there.  I’m from Detroit and New York, by the way, so I have no ties to New Mexico outside of the film industry.

We’ll post periodic updates about MIDLIFE and other projects helped by NexTv here on the blog. (www.nextventertainment.com/blog)

On a personal note: NexTv began as an idea I had in the shower.  The idea, became a mission, now it is a REALITY for more than just me.

Moral of the story: I need to begin showering again!

Check back for updates on MIDLIFE the feature.

Welcome to the NexTv blog.

As another part of our effort to become a truly valuable resource for filmmakers, writers and industry professionals, we have created a place where dialogue about the exciting challenges of our industry can begin.

Come back and see what we are up to. We will have interesting articles about the industry, interviews with relevant players from all four corners of this business, competition updates, exclusive deals from NexTv and from vendors around the world, videos, photos, and some targeted musings by me and my staff. We encourage all of you to get involved.

We will begin a series called “Live from On Set”, where filmmakers will have the opportunity to keep a log, of sorts, of their daily experience on set. Whether you are shooting a web series in Burbank, a commercial in Michigan, a documentary in Dubai or a film in India, we want to peak into the daily life of a filmmaker. Contact me directly at rbecker@nextventertainment.com if you want to get involved…or if you have other ideas for us. We get a lot of traffic on our site and will get a ton more in the coming months. This can be a valuable resource for someone who wants to reach out to NexTv’s large online community. We’re extremely excited about all of the possibilities.

Here’s to the beginning of something!

(CLOCKWISE) Michael Swingler (Grand Prize Winner and recipient of the NexTv Grant worth $140,000 for MIDLIFE), NexTv Founder, Randy Becker with Alex Cohn (winner of Writing Competition’s Flip Camera Challenge), Brigham Cottam (Best Unscipted Comedy), Omer Zigdon (Best Scripted Drama, BANISKO), Zeus Quijano Jr. (Best Unscripted Drama, POINT OF ENTRY)

Congratulations to our winners from our Next TV 2009 Web Series & Short Film Competition:

The idea of judging art is paradoxical in many ways, especially when we’re dealing with a wide variety of outstanding submissions.  We try to use criteria that reflect the reality of today’s marketplace, keeping us out of that festival/competition ‘bubble’.  Can your work be re-imagined for tv?  Does your work have value as a seed for something greater?

We instruct our judges to choose the one they feel is “best”, but that “best” in this case is a true combination of their personal favorite and the one they think is most viable as content in today’s actual marketplace.  We bring in judges who are working and making decisions in today’s industry not just to give you the opportunity for high-level exposure, but also so we can get a panel that is intuitively atuned to what works in the real world.

The marriage of art and commerce is the goal.  Marriage is a challenge, but when it works, the result is transcendent.
